Leadership Is Misunderstood: The True Essence of Influence
Leadership is often misunderstood because so many of us think of it in terms of position or role. When someone says “leader,” it’s easy to picture a CEO, a manager, or someone with an official title. While those roles can certainly involve leadership, they don’t provide a true, workable definition of what leadership actually means.
The best definition of leadership I’ve ever come across comes from John Maxwell, who has authored more than 75 leadership books. His definition is both simple and profound: “Leadership is influence. Nothing more, nothing less.”
This definition shifts the focus from titles and roles to action and impact. It means that leadership isn’t confined to a certain position or a particular type of person. No matter who you are, you have influence. And no matter your role—whether you’re at the top of an organization, part of a team, or within your family—you can lead.
Influence is something we all possess, and it can be used for good or for bad. When you start to view leadership as influence, it becomes more accessible. It’s not about waiting for a promotion or a special designation. It’s about recognizing that every interaction is an opportunity to lead. You can influence those around you through your words, actions, and even your attitude.
When you embrace this perspective, leadership becomes a part of your everyday life. It’s not something reserved for the boardroom or a specific role. It’s a tool for bettering your life and the lives of those around you. Whether it’s offering support to a colleague, guiding your team through a challenge, or setting a positive example for your kids, you are leading.
At Learning Unlimited, we help individuals and organizations tap into this broader, more effective understanding of leadership. Through our coaching programs, assessments, and leadership development tools, we guide people in harnessing their influence—regardless of their formal role. It’s about empowering everyone to step into leadership and contribute to a culture of growth, positivity, and progress.
Take a moment to let this idea ruminate. Reflect on the ways you already influence those around you and consider how you can expand that influence in positive ways.
Until next time, keep learning, keep growing, and remember—leadership is within you, right where you are.
